Differences Between Proofreading and Copyediting

Proofreading provides the “final polish.” A professional proofreader ensures that an author’s final text is ready to be published.

Proofreaders check for:

  • Typos
  • Spelling errors
  • Punctuation errors
  • Bad line breaks
  • Font or layout issues

The purpose of copyediting is to improve the copy—to make it flow better and to get rid of errors. Copyeditors suggest changes to copy that will help with readability and correct inconsistencies.

Copyeditors check for:

  • Errors in sentence structure, spelling, punctuation
  • Consistency errors
  • Formatting, content, and structure errors (including style)
  • Ambiguity (too vague) and anomalies (not standard)

“Jessica took a polished manuscript and made it even better. Her eye for detail and her understanding of what goes into a good story makes her the ideal teammate in the publishing process. I can’t recommend her highly enough!”

Jack Hardin, Fiction Author

“Jessica’s attention to detail with her proofread of Enduring Love was invaluable. I highly recommend her services as a fresh set of eyes caught errors I had missed through several self edits.”

Suzie Waltner, Fiction Author

“I loved the editing experience I had with Jess. Her process of attacking content, thought, & congruence first, then grammar/punctuation second helped the whole thing not feel overwhelming. Framing editing that way protects the original inspiration. It honors getting the thought out first and doesn’t suffocate it by fussing over whether it is grammatically correct yet or not. I felt like Jess was careful to respect my “voice” and yet wasn’t afraid to push in some areas where clarity, brevity, or development was needed. I could tell she put a lot of thought, time and care into her editing process and I am grateful to have had the experience.”

Stephanie Skipper, Blogger

“I had the pleasure of working closely with Jessica for an entire year. Both of us working remotely from different states to produce a large event in yet another area of the country. Her continual professionalism and kindness heavily impacted the success of the fundraiser as well as aided in my sanity while managing other details and fires that came my way. Jessica met every deadline while always keeping the audience’s best interest at heart. Her strong copy editing and design skills ensured our marketing and branding was presented with excellence every time, resulting in creating exciting anticipation and a positive experience for everyone who attended. I would highly recommend Jessica for anyone’s copy editing, content editing, web design and social platform consulting, and additional creative services!”

“Jess and I worked together for 6 years on the social media platform for an entertainer with 5 million plus followers. She created, managed, and proofed all content that was posted daily. Jess was fantastic at gauging the content, its relevance, and spot on accurate with all wording needs. She was vital in this effort and overall just a pleasure to work alongside.”
