I am a photographer who loves to shoot, but hates to process my shots. Hate it with a passion … like cleaning toilets or going to the dentist. Of course, I like the result, but the process(ing) not at all.
Maybe it’s because my interest in photography began in the film era. I loved taking that roll of film to be developed and then flipping through the resulting images. Even better, I loved working in the dark room. In college, when I was taking photography courses, I had access to a dark room and enlarger and used to spend hours in there. And then came the switch to digital, in the autumn of 2005. With digital, I was no longer limited to 36/shots a roll … no more worrying about the cost of film or the cost of developing! A blessing that definitely brought with it the curse of overshooting. Trying to select the best few shots out of 36 is, it turns out, much easier than narrowing down from 343. So now I’ve become the photographer who shoots, dumps hundreds of shots onto my computer, and then procrastinates going through them until I either have to because of a deadline, or I am procrastinating something else I don’t want to do … like clean the toilets.
Since this has been a problem for awhile, I have been trying to find a solution. First, I purchased and learned to use Adobe Lightroom. Two steps forward! Then, I started shooting everything in “raw” because, whoa, you can make crap look like gold if you shoot it in raw! One step back. Next, I learned that if I’m really pumped about what I shot, I should process right away … like last June when I shot one of my favorite bands, House of Heroes, at my favorite venue (The Rutledge). I was still so wired when I got home, that I sat down and went through them right away *with* my husband which is also key. He has a knack for knowing off the bat what’s a good shot and what isn’t. I processed down to 30 shots that I love from probably over 250 and popped out a gorgeous gallery from Lightroom ready to share with the band and the world. That was such a great feeling!
Yet, more often than not, I feel like I’m wading through murky waters trying to find jewels … I don’t like it because it’s time-consuming, because I’m indecisive, and, probably, because it used to be so much easier when I just picked up my roll of developed film.
But as I was processing some event photos recently, I came to the realization that the time is beneficial for more than just the finished shots that are produced. As I’m weeding through what I’ve shot, I am thinking of ways to improve. The process is integral to becoming a better photographer.

As you can see, it has been approximately two months and 6 days since I last blogged. I started the New Year wanting to add a post to this blog site at least once a month … yesterday evening, I decided to give it a facelift, the whole time thinking I really should be blogging instead of tinkering with the design of this. Eventually though, I decided it was worth the time spent if being excited by the look of my site would encourage me to blog more often. (side note: special thanks to my husband for tackling a good part of the coding on this today!)
So I want to blog more often, but I don’t. Why is that? Because, I tell myself, I’m just too busy. I don’t have enough “free” time. The truth is, I’m so used to being “busy,” I don’t know what it’s like to not be “busy.” Soon after I moved to Nashville in 1999, I was working both a full-time job and a part-time job. I honestly can’t remember the last time I was “bored” i.e. had nothing to do (aside from being in the waiting room at a doctor’s office). And somehow, the whole effect is intensified by the fact that I am self-employed … you’d think I would have more time because I work from home and am in charge of my own schedule. Especially since I don’t have to commute! Instead, I find myself a slave to the clock, feeling pressured to fill my time with productivity and billable hours.
And then, if I do find myself staring down a few hours of “free” time, I often become paralyzed by the thoughts of everything I want to get done … work on my wedding scrapbook, organize my office, exercise, clean the bathroom, respond to emails, process photos, write a blog, spend time with my dogs, watch a movie with my husband … an hour later, I’ve chosen an activity, but I’m still thinking of the other things I could be doing, and did I make the right choice. And almost every night, I go to bed wishing I had been able to check more off my mental to-do list than I did that day.
But when I step back and take a look at my life and my daily “routine,” I really don’t think that I am responsible for more than most people. In fact, I think of the people I know who have kids and pets and jobs and they volunteer at church … and I wonder, how the heck do they do it?? I can barely get my work done, keep my house clean and have some resemblance of a social life … and I have a very helpful husband! The last thing I want to do is come across as that self-important person whose answer to “How are you?” is “Oh my gosh, I’m SO busy… I have to [insert list of important sounding activities here].” While I suppose that sometimes “busy” or “stressed” is a valid and true answer (better than “fine” when you’ve really been nothing close to fine) … it often comes across sounding like a challenge: “This is how busy-slash-important I am … top THAT!”
The truth is, we are all busy to some degree. We all fill our time with activities … and we make time for what is really important to us. I often wonder if I’d get a lot more done if I slept less … I’d have more “awake” hours in the day but I really don’t function well on less sleep and if I’m not 100%, chances are, I won’t have the mental or physical energy to get more done in my “awake” hours. And as much as I’d like to think that multi-tasking is the answer, reality demonstrates that I just end up with a bunch of half-done tasks and no sense of completion.
I love the book of Ecclesiastes, especially the wonderfully poetic and famous section “There is a time for everything under the sun…” because it’s so true, so relevant to our society’s culture of busyness. There is a time to prioritize every aspect of your life … rest so your body can refuel, work so you can earn a living, fellowship so your spirit can be refreshed. The choices we make determine how we spend our time, and it’s a daily battle to make the “right” choices, but every day is a new day… and no matter how hard we wish otherwise, there are only 24 hours in a day.
By the way, the photo is of the zen garden at Cheekwood, taken when the Chihuly exhibit was there. Chris and I took an afternoon off of work to see the exhibit on Community Day (read: free admission). We could have easily been “too busy” to go, but we made a choice to make the time and did not regret it one bit. But, I still haven’t had time to process the 119 photos I took there …
