Furosemide is a potent diuretic (water pill). Furosemide works by blocking the absorption of salt and fluid in the kidney tubules, causing a profound increase in urine output (diuresis). The diuretic effect of furosemide can cause body water and electrolyte depletion. Therefore, careful medical supervision is necessary during treatment.

Yep, it’s true… after being out of school for more than 13 years, I became a student once again. This past August, I enrolled at MTSU (Middle TN State University), about 45 minutes from where I currently live, in order to pursue a degree in forensic science. Quite a change from web site management and graphic design, you might think, and correctly so. Here’s how I came to such a life-changing decision…

My career since graduating from Azusa Pacific University in 1998 has definitely had its ups and downs. I’ve been hired, I’ve quit, I’ve been laid off and yes I’ve even been fired. I also took a side road for a bit as a server in the restaurant industry. However, in May 2005, I took the leap into self-employment. For me, self-employment had a lot of up-sides: working from home, setting my own schedule, using a variety of skills. I started my company with three clients – TobyMac, Tait Band and Gotee Records. Many others have come and gone since then, but I’ve been blessed to continue working with TobyMac and his management True Artist. It is such a privilege to work alongside an artist and a company who focus on quality and integrity, and who are definitely “in it” for the right reason. I have learned so much, and I truly love working in the Christian music industry.

However, circumstances in my life over the past 13 months have caused me to ask some serious questions, like “Where is my career heading?” … “Am I passionate about my work?” … “Will my financial situation ever improve?” and, most importantly, “Am I best utilizing the gifts God has given me?” After much soul-seeking, I concluded that a) self-employment is not a great fit for me and b) creating and maintaining websites, while an enjoyable hobby during college, is not something I desire to do for the rest of my life. So, I had to look at what I did want to do … and while continuing to work within Christian music would be ideal, I had to come to terms with the fact that there are very few jobs and even fewer well-paying jobs. I thought about my interests and my skills but I also took into account the work situation… something I wanted to avoid was working in front of a computer in a cubicle. As I was looking through job opportunities, one caught my attention – forensic photographer for the FBI in Las Vegas. I thought, “Hey, that sounds exciting!” Plus, I do have photography skills as well as a degree in Art. I didn’t apply as I didn’t want to move away from Nashville, but the idea never left me. Then, in June, I read a riveting article about a cold case and DNA evidence, and I was hooked. I began research in earnest.

I spent a whole lot more time and energy researching my new career than I did the before I chose my first major, back in 1994. Of course, it’s a lot easier now, with the Internet. I chose Art for my first degree because the classes sounded like fun (they were) and I wanted to work at a music magazine (I did). Now, magazines are dying or going digital, and unemployment rates are highest among those who majored in Art (according to this study). Search for design jobs, and most openings are for “user interface design,” which is design for apps or software or websites. This time around, I looked at labor statistics and job descriptions and earning potential … basically anything I could find. I was especially inspired by an article I came across about a woman who won a grant and became a forensic scientist. I even tracked her down and she graciously answered some questions for me about her job. (Oh, and I ruled out forensic photography because it’s actually not a very prevalent position and it doesn’t pay very well.)

Let me be honest – my interest in forensic science was initially piqued by the television show CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. I have watched it faithfully since its inception and also watch the Miami and New York versions. I also love the show Bones (she is a forensic anthropologist but some of the other characters are forensic scientists). I read law novels (Grisham) and crime novels (Grafton) and have recently been diving into anything Sherlock Holmes related. I do realize, though, that the fictional shows are not completely accurate to the real-life occupation. I have thoroughly researched the differences. Lately, I’ve also been watching true-life crime TV like The First 48 and 48 Hours Mystery … anything that might show or talk about real forensics work.

Once I realized that I truly wanted to pursue a career in forensics, it all came together pretty quickly… I found out that MTSU started offering the degree which was very fortunate since it is nearby. While it’s sufficient to major in Biology or Chemistry, I preferred the specific forensic science degree (mostly Biology and Chemistry classes but also includes some classes specific to forensic science as well as a required internship). I looked at online programs, but in order to work in a lab (which offers better hours, pay and more job opportunities than actual crime scene technicians), one must have a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant science, which requires going to lab classes in person. Ideally the degree would be earned through an accredited program (by the AAFS) – MTSU’s is too new to qualify but hopefully that will change by the time I graduate. I was able to transfer a lot of credits from my first degree, enough to fulfill most of the general course requirements. I initially thought I wouldn’t be able to start until this month, but I was able to get everything processed in time and get the classes I needed for the fall semester. I took Pre-Calculus and Chemistry, earning an A and a B respectively. This semester I’m taking Biology and Calculus.

I never thought I’d go back to school and it is hard, let me tell you. I thought my head was going to explode last semester in Pre-Calculus. I was really good at math in high school, but that was over 18 years ago! But I’m loving the experience of learning (I appreciate it more this time, that’s for sure) … plus I’m quite motivated by my career goals. In the meantime, I am so grateful that I can continue to work with my clients, who have been so supportive of my new venture. This is truly not something I could do without the support and encouragement of those I work with, my close friends, my family and especially my husband. I will do my best to keep you updated as I travel down this path!

Bear with me while I share a bit of work-related stuff…

Today I finished and posted a page for tobymac.com about the members of his touring band … or DiverseCity as he has dubbed them. I’ve been meaning to do this for months but it kept falling by the wayside, until the current tour (HipRockFunkSoul featuring solo songs by each band member) pushed it to the front burner. It wasn’t necessarily a hard task, but there were a lot of pieces that had to come together. First, I had to select live photos for each band member, which then had to be approved by them. Next, I had to compose a set of questions for them to answer and send them to each of the 9 members via email. Finally, I had to edit the copy (for clarity and brevity), add links and create the HTML layout to place into WordPress. So, needless to say, I experienced a certain bit of elation when I finally posted it today (sans answers from one band member who has thankfully already been featured in a Journal post on the site).

Diverse City band

I’m actually pretty happy with how it turned out. A few of my favorite answers are …

Describe what you do onstage at a TobyMac show: Shake it while playing keys. Anything awesome that happens comes from me. I am the wizard. (Dave, and I’m thinking you have to know him to get how funny that is.)

Words of wisdom to live by: Outside of a relationship with Jesus, everything loses its luster after awhile. He is the only inexhaustible treasure. (Nirva, who is such an inspiration to me.)

List a few words that others often use to describe your personality. Encouraging, fun, energetic, child-like… (Byron, and those four words describe him so perfectly.)

What is a food or drink that you refuse to eat or drink? V8! I mean, vegetables are bad already…  there’s no need to put them all in liquid form together. (Gabe, who can always make me laugh.)

In the midst of accomplishing this, I thought, you know, I made them answer these questions … it’s only fair that I should have to as well. Granted, I’ll have to change the meaning a bit since I’m not in the band, but hey, there’s always room for a little creative thinking, right?

How did you come to be a part of DiverseCity? I will try to give the short story of how I came to work with TobyMac and his amazing entourage … A longtime dc talk fan (since 1990), I made a fan website for them when I was a sophomore in college which morphed into a collaborative, archival fan site with an interactive newsletter (www.ardent-enthusiast.com). Through the newsletter, I met the keyboard player, then their road manager, and then Toby (who knew about our website). I moved to Nashville in 1999 to work for a Christian music magazine which lead to the opportunity to create an incarnation of dctalk.com. Over the next few years, I kept in touch with the guys and their management, and was asked in 2003 to help out with Tait’s website and then TobyMac’s website. Eight years later … I look back and am amazed at how God guided my path to get to work with a business and a ministry I wholeheartedly believe in, beyond any dream I had for myself.

Describe what you do onstage at a TobyMac show. If I am ever anywhere near the stage during the concert, I am taking photos. If I’m just watching the show, I like to be a bit further away so I can take in all of the action and watch the crowd get into it.

What is your all-time favorite TobyMac song to perform live? My favorite TobyMac songs to hear live are “Yours,” “Diverse City,” “No Ordinary Love,” and “Tonight.” (Yep, I picked one from each album. I’m just awesome like that, lol.)

List some other musical artists who inspire you. Other than dc talk and TobyMac, Switchfoot is the band who consistently puts out music that inspires me and encourages my walk with Christ. Other artists I really like right now are House of Heroes, needtobreathe, Relient K, Francesca Battistelli, Superchic[k], Jamie Grace, Mandisa, Abandon Kansas and Peter Furler.

What do you do in your spare time when you’re not on tour? I used to want to be out on tour with everyone, but now I’m content to be home with my husband and my two dogs. When I’m not working on my giant iMac in my home office, I may be at the park running, at the gym, shopping, taking photos, cooking, cleaning the house, going to the dog park or getting together with friends.

List a few words that others often use to describe your personality. Perfectionist, sensitive, caring, funny.

What is something about you that we’d all be surprised to know? I was an aspiring model for a few years during my teens. I just wanted to do something useful with my height (I’m about 6 feet tall) … wish I would’ve known that volleyball was an option!

What is a food or drink that you refuse to eat or drink? Tomato juice, just the thought of it, makes me gag. I’ll try most any food at least once, except for insects … even if they’re covered in chocolate.

Describe a memorable moment for you since being a part of DiverseCity. There have been many but two correlating memories that are very special to me are … I met Toby randomly in a hotel lobby after a show on my 21st birthday. Ten years later, also on my birthday, I attended a reception celebrating gold records for his first two albums. I asked him if he remembered meeting me in that hotel lobby in San Diego, which he did. Then I said, “Can you believe that was ten years ago, to the day?” Pretty crazy.

Words of wisdom to live by. “Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you. This is the essence of all that is taught in the law and the prophets.” -Matthew 7:12, New Living Translation
