Furosemide is a potent diuretic (water pill). Furosemide works by blocking the absorption of salt and fluid in the kidney tubules, causing a profound increase in urine output (diuresis). The diuretic effect of furosemide can cause body water and electrolyte depletion. Therefore, careful medical supervision is necessary during treatment.

This blog entry is brought to you by the Castle Ink Paperless Scholarship 2012.

I heard a wonderfully exciting story on NPR the other day about a company that is turning recycled plastic into fuel. I often wonder if my recycling efforts make a difference, and the story gave me hope that they do. I’ve been a pretty avid recycler since my college years in California (you actually get money back in California when you recycle). I am mostly motivated by the terrifying thought of everything ending up in a landfill … so I recycle anything that can be recycled in hopes that something good will be done with it.

Thankfully, the city where we live initiated a curbside recycling program about a year ago, which has made it so much easier to recycle. In previous years, I’ve collected my recycleables into separate bins in the garage (glass, plastic, aluminum, paper, cardboard) and hauled them every month or so to a recycling center. Now, we can just pack it all up in blue bags (which I purchase at Costco) and set them on our curb for pickup each week. However, they don’t accept glass, so I save that separately and take it to the recycling center. The awesome thing is that we only put our trash can out every other week, and it’s usually not full. Granted, there are only two of us, but it still makes me happy that we generate so little trash. Soon, I hope to be able to purchase a composter … I think about half of what I throw away is biodegradable. Once we have that, we’ll only be putting our trash can out once a month!

There are other ways too in which my husband and I “reduce, reuse, and recycle.” My husband, Chris, is the king of repurposing when it comes to stuff around the house. I was going to throw away an old entertainment center of particle board when we first got married; instead, he showed me how the bottom of it could be a bar in the living room and the top could be shelves in the closet. We have also cut back on our consumption of bottled beverages. We have a reverse osmosis water filter and we keep a large pitcher in the refrigerator for drinking water. We just fill our reusable cups before we leave the house. I am also careful to recycle my ink cartridges and to purchase refilled cartridges instead of new. It’s also important to me to support companies and restaurants that recycle and practice other “green” habits … we frequent our nearby Whole Foods and love everything they stand for.

In closing, I urge you to check out this short article that gives five great reasons why you should recycle.

Yep, it’s true… after being out of school for more than 13 years, I became a student once again. This past August, I enrolled at MTSU (Middle TN State University), about 45 minutes from where I currently live, in order to pursue a degree in forensic science. Quite a change from web site management and graphic design, you might think, and correctly so. Here’s how I came to such a life-changing decision…

My career since graduating from Azusa Pacific University in 1998 has definitely had its ups and downs. I’ve been hired, I’ve quit, I’ve been laid off and yes I’ve even been fired. I also took a side road for a bit as a server in the restaurant industry. However, in May 2005, I took the leap into self-employment. For me, self-employment had a lot of up-sides: working from home, setting my own schedule, using a variety of skills. I started my company with three clients – TobyMac, Tait Band and Gotee Records. Many others have come and gone since then, but I’ve been blessed to continue working with TobyMac and his management True Artist. It is such a privilege to work alongside an artist and a company who focus on quality and integrity, and who are definitely “in it” for the right reason. I have learned so much, and I truly love working in the Christian music industry.

However, circumstances in my life over the past 13 months have caused me to ask some serious questions, like “Where is my career heading?” … “Am I passionate about my work?” … “Will my financial situation ever improve?” and, most importantly, “Am I best utilizing the gifts God has given me?” After much soul-seeking, I concluded that a) self-employment is not a great fit for me and b) creating and maintaining websites, while an enjoyable hobby during college, is not something I desire to do for the rest of my life. So, I had to look at what I did want to do … and while continuing to work within Christian music would be ideal, I had to come to terms with the fact that there are very few jobs and even fewer well-paying jobs. I thought about my interests and my skills but I also took into account the work situation… something I wanted to avoid was working in front of a computer in a cubicle. As I was looking through job opportunities, one caught my attention – forensic photographer for the FBI in Las Vegas. I thought, “Hey, that sounds exciting!” Plus, I do have photography skills as well as a degree in Art. I didn’t apply as I didn’t want to move away from Nashville, but the idea never left me. Then, in June, I read a riveting article about a cold case and DNA evidence, and I was hooked. I began research in earnest.

I spent a whole lot more time and energy researching my new career than I did the before I chose my first major, back in 1994. Of course, it’s a lot easier now, with the Internet. I chose Art for my first degree because the classes sounded like fun (they were) and I wanted to work at a music magazine (I did). Now, magazines are dying or going digital, and unemployment rates are highest among those who majored in Art (according to this study). Search for design jobs, and most openings are for “user interface design,” which is design for apps or software or websites. This time around, I looked at labor statistics and job descriptions and earning potential … basically anything I could find. I was especially inspired by an article I came across about a woman who won a grant and became a forensic scientist. I even tracked her down and she graciously answered some questions for me about her job. (Oh, and I ruled out forensic photography because it’s actually not a very prevalent position and it doesn’t pay very well.)

Let me be honest – my interest in forensic science was initially piqued by the television show CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. I have watched it faithfully since its inception and also watch the Miami and New York versions. I also love the show Bones (she is a forensic anthropologist but some of the other characters are forensic scientists). I read law novels (Grisham) and crime novels (Grafton) and have recently been diving into anything Sherlock Holmes related. I do realize, though, that the fictional shows are not completely accurate to the real-life occupation. I have thoroughly researched the differences. Lately, I’ve also been watching true-life crime TV like The First 48 and 48 Hours Mystery … anything that might show or talk about real forensics work.

Once I realized that I truly wanted to pursue a career in forensics, it all came together pretty quickly… I found out that MTSU started offering the degree which was very fortunate since it is nearby. While it’s sufficient to major in Biology or Chemistry, I preferred the specific forensic science degree (mostly Biology and Chemistry classes but also includes some classes specific to forensic science as well as a required internship). I looked at online programs, but in order to work in a lab (which offers better hours, pay and more job opportunities than actual crime scene technicians), one must have a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant science, which requires going to lab classes in person. Ideally the degree would be earned through an accredited program (by the AAFS) – MTSU’s is too new to qualify but hopefully that will change by the time I graduate. I was able to transfer a lot of credits from my first degree, enough to fulfill most of the general course requirements. I initially thought I wouldn’t be able to start until this month, but I was able to get everything processed in time and get the classes I needed for the fall semester. I took Pre-Calculus and Chemistry, earning an A and a B respectively. This semester I’m taking Biology and Calculus.

I never thought I’d go back to school and it is hard, let me tell you. I thought my head was going to explode last semester in Pre-Calculus. I was really good at math in high school, but that was over 18 years ago! But I’m loving the experience of learning (I appreciate it more this time, that’s for sure) … plus I’m quite motivated by my career goals. In the meantime, I am so grateful that I can continue to work with my clients, who have been so supportive of my new venture. This is truly not something I could do without the support and encouragement of those I work with, my close friends, my family and especially my husband. I will do my best to keep you updated as I travel down this path!
